Problem Solving

 

OBJECTIVES

  • To develop a positive approach to resolving issues in the workplace
  • To consider how different thinking styles have an impact on the effectiveness of our problem solving
  • To distinguish between dealing with effects and fixing causes
  • To introduce a systematic approach to problem solving and identifying a range of data collection and analysis tools

 

RUNNING TIME

  • Depending on the program, the basic module can run from 3 – 4 hours
  • With the use of all of the possible exercises and exploring (even solving) workplace problems brought to the workshop, this module can run for a full day

 

SUMMARY OF CONTENT

  • Participants discuss what problems mean to organisations
  • The importance of different thinking processes and thinking styles is considered and when to select the appropriate approach
  • Participants consider a particular definition for “a problem” and apply this definition to their workplace
  • A seven step problem model is introduced and participants are given the opportunity to practice its application
  • A range of data collection and data analysis tools are considered and guidelines given on which may be the most appropriate to select in particular stages
  • Participants consider the effectiveness of adopting a common model across various organisational  functions
