Discipline and Grievance Handling

 

OBJECTIVES

  • To give line managers an understanding of their responsibilities in the areas of discipline and grievance handling
  • To consider both the principles and practice of what managers should do, and why, and provide a process for them to use
  • To develop participants’ awareness of the preventative role of early action

 

RUNNING TIME

  • 2 – 4 hours depending on the time allowed to discuss case studies and/or if Company policies and procedures are to be discussed in detail
  • This module can be incorporated as part of the Management Development Program

 

SUMMARY OF CONTENT

  • Participants are guided through the principles underpinning the management of discipline and grievance issues and their legal context
  • Participants consider the purpose of disciplinary and/or grievance interviews
  • A set of objectives for disciplinary and grievance policy is discussed
  • The difference between “consistency and fairness” and “formal and informal” is addressed
  • Through discussion of mini case studies participants develop a checklist for steps they can use
  • The relationship between effective performance management systems and the topics of this workshop is addressed
